ROUND’S OUT. HEX IS IN. HERE’S WHY IT MATTERS FOR YOUR AUGER.

Let’s be honest: nobody likes when a standard changes—especially when you’ve built your setup around it.

For years, round output shafts were the go-to for augers. You ran them on skid steers, tractors, you name it. And they worked fine… until they didn’t.

Now? HEX is taking over. And it’s not just a trend—it’s the new industry standard. Machines are coming off the line ready for HEX, and more bits are being built that way too. Convert kits exist, sure, but in some cases, it might be smarter to update your gear altogether.

⚠️ SO WHAT WAS WRONG WITH ROUND?

If you’ve ever had your bit spin inside the collar, or felt it slip under pressure—you already know. Round shafts wear fast. Once the inside of your auger bit gets wallowed out, that slop can ruin the lining, mess up your holes, or worse—leave you dead in the dirt with a job half done.

Problems with round shafts:

  • Slips under torque
  • Bits wear unevenly
  • Weak contact = more repairs
  • Not made for today’s higher-torque machines

🔩 WHY HEX IS A GAME CHANGER

HEX shafts solve what round never could. The flat sides lock in tight, giving you consistent torque with way less wear. No more slop. No more spin. No more guessing if today’s the day your auger eats itself.

With HEX, you get:

  • Real torque transfer—no slipping
  • Cleaner, faster hole digging
  • Less wear on the collar and shaft
  • Stronger performance in rocky or clay-heavy soil (sound familiar?)

You work too hard to deal with busted collars and bad holes.

🛠️ WHAT TO DO NOW

If you’re still running round, you’ve got a decision to make:

  1. Stick with round? You’ll need a convert bit or adapter (and cross your fingers your old ones hold up).
  2. Switch to HEX? Get longer life, cleaner operation, and fewer problems down the road.

But here’s the deal:
If your auger bit is already showing wear, it’s probably not worth converting. You might just be throwing good money at worn-out steel. A new HEX bit might save you time and money in the long run.
